2005-2006 Activities

A five-day training seminar on “EU Citizenship” was organised between 14-17 November 2005 in collaboration with the Union of Izmir Women’s Associations. Representatives of 27 women associations have attended the seminars and received certificates.

Department head Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir submitted a paper at the “International Symposium on the Changes and Transformations in the Socio-economic and Political Structure of Turkey within the context of EU negotiations” organized by Dumlupinar University in Kütahya between 16-18 March 2006 (Jointly with T. Durmuslar, I. Ergün and D. Soyaltin, title: “The Impact of Europeanisation on the Institutional and Administrative transformation: Case study of public, private and civil society institutions in Izmir)

Prof. Dr. Balkir attended the Research Seminar on “Competing Theories of European Integration: Drawing Lines Through a Dot?”, organized by Middle East Technical University Centre for European Studies on 23 March 2006.

Prof. Balkir attended the ECPR Joint Sessions of Workshops between April 25-30 2006 organised in Nicosia, Cyprus, where she presented a co-authored paper on “The Turkish Cypriot Business Community: a politico-economic actor in search of a resolution”.

“The first-year course of the Jean Monnet Module on “Policies and Institutions of an Enlarging European Union” took place between 13th March 2006-17th May 2006. Graduate students from Faculty of Theology and Department of Translation and Interpretation attended the courses for ten weeks and received their certificates on 31 May 2006. Department of European Studies and Aegean Region Chamber of Industry (EBSO) have jointly organised a project contest for pupils of secondary education, in order to raise awareness on the basics of the EU. Successful pupils were granted their awards in the ceremony held at EBSO on 6 June 2006.

Between 15 March-19 June 2006, Aegean Foundation for Economic Development (EGEV) organised a series of seminars titled “Aegean Opinion Leaders and the European Union” addressed to the representatives of industry, civil society and local authorities in the towns of Izmir, Afyon, Aydin, Balikesir, Canakkale, Denizli, Kütahya, Mugla, Usak, Manisa. Faculty members of the Department of European Studies Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir and Dr. Esin Taylan have participated as lecturers in this programme.

Research Assistant Ilkay Tas attended the Postgraduate Tourism Students’ Congress organised by the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and “Anatolia Journal of Tourism Research” in Çanakkale between 25-28 May 2006 with a paper titled: “Tourism in the regional policy of the European Union”.

Research Assistant Sedef Eylemer attended the Fifth International Congress on “International Security: Old Issues, New Challenges” organised by Middle East Technical University between 15-17 June 2006 in Ankara with a paper titled “Migration-Security Nexus in the Euro-Mediterranean Relations”.

Prof. Dr. Balkir gave a lecture on “EU-Turkey Relations”, organised as a part of the Orientation Programme for outgoing Erasmus students on 20 June 2006.

The Department and Aegean Region Chamber of Industry (EBSO) organised a panel on “Future of the Northern Cyprus Economy in the Perspective of EU” on 21 June 2006, at which President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat delivered a speech. The panel was presided over by Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir.

On 23 June 2006 Izmir University of Economics and Izmir Chamber of Commerce organized the 1st Biennial International Women’s Studies Conference. Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir attended the conference as a chairperson and commentator; she delivered a speech on the impacts of the European Union on the socio-economic development of women.

On 6 July 2006 Prof. Dr. Balkir presided over a panel titled “Going Ahead in Fluctuating Markets”, organized by Aegean Young Businessmen’s Association and the weekly journal “Gözlem”.
