2009-2010 Activities

On 17.06.2010 opening ceremony of the European Documentation Centre was held at Dokuz Eylul University Central Library. Prof. Dr. Alp Timur, Vice Rector of Dokuz Eylul University and Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir, Head of the Department of EU Studies, and Tibor Varadi, Deputy Head of EU Delegation to Turkey have made the opening speeches. Prof. Dr. Alp Timur has argued that Turkey has progressed on the way of EU membership with enthusiasm and has deserved many things not granted to Turkey yet. Emphasizing the importance of the accurate information in Turkey-EU relations, Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir has argued that European Documentation Centre will contribute to studies and researches on Turkey-EU relations. In his speech Tibor Varadi has expressed his pleasure for intense interest of the university and students on the EU affairs. After the opening speeches Tibor Varadi has made an interactive discussion with the students.

On 18.05.2010 Prof. Michael H. Smith from Loughborough University, UK, gave a lecture on “The European Union as a Global Trade Actor: Challenges and Opportunities”. In his presentation Prof. Smith has focused on the challenges and opportunities confronting the European Union in its trade and broader commercial policies.

On 27.04.2010 a roundtable titled “Europeanization and the Role of Economic Elites in Romania, Hungary and Turkey” was organized with the collaboration of the Aegean Young Businessmen Association (EGIAD). Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir moderated the roundtable and the speakers were Prof. Dr. Nicolae Paun, JM Chair, Babes-Bolyai University of Romania, Prof. Dr. Tibor Palankai, JM Chair, Corvinus University of Budapest-Hungary, Yigit Tatis Deputy Chairman of EGIAD, and Gamze Yayman of EGIAD.

On 22.04.2010 a conference titled “Trade and Global Economy: EU and Turkey” was organized with the collaboration of IKV (Economic Development Foundation). Prof. Dr. Utku Utkulu Director of the Graduate School of Social Sciences and Prof. Dr. Haluk Kabaalioglu, JM Chair and Chairman of the Economic Development Foundation made the opening speeches. The conference was moderated by the Prof. Dr. Canan Balkýr and the discussants were Sahin Yaman from the Undersecretariat of the Foreign Trade, Dr. Sait Akman from Marmara University and Dr. Dilek Seymen from Dokuz Eylul University.

On 09.04.2010 a roundtable was organized with the collaboration of Aegean Centre for European Studies. In the roundtable Prof. Thomas Diez from Tubingen University gave a lecture on “Democracy, Peace, Justice: Interrogating the European Value Triangle”.

Between 29.03.2010 and 01.04.2010, under Erasmus Programme, Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir was invited to lecture to the graduate students on the subjects of “Analyzing the Accession Process of Turkey with the Europeanization Model of External Incentives” and “The Limits to EU Conditionality: Analyzing Domestic Change in Turkey” at Ghent University in Belgium.

A workshop titled “Globalization and Market Economy” was organized in Izmir on 20.03.2010 and 21.03.2010, with the collaboration of Friedrich Naumann Stiftung. Dr. Bican Sahin from Hacettepe University and Dr. Bahattin Karademir from Çukurova University moderated the sessions and the participants composed of graduate students prepared group works and present them at the end of the day.

On 17.03.2010 Prof. Oliver Richmond from St. Andrews University, School of International Relations gave a lecture on “The Emergence of a Post-Liberal Peace: Implications for the Development of an EU Peacebuilding Framework”.

On March 5-6 2010, Prof. Dr. Canan Balkir presented a paper titled “Turkey’s Road to EU Membership; Economic Outlook” at the Conference titled “Evaluation of EU Membership of Hungary” organized by the European Studies and the Education Centre of Corvinus University and the Hungarian European Community Studies Association in Budapest.

On 15.12.2009 a roundtable was organised with the colloboration of Friedrich Naumann Foundation. In the roundtable, Peter Althammer from ARD Erstes Deutsches Fernsehen, Daniel Steinvorth from Der Spiegel and Michael Martens from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung delivered speeches on “Turkey-EU” relations.

A workshop was organised with the Faculty of Theology on 19.10.2009. Prof.Dr. Edmund Weber from Goethe University delivered a lecture on “Institutional Relationship of Religion and State in Western European Countries”, and Prof. Dr. Ali Ihsan Yitik and Dr. Bekir Zakir Coban from the Faculty of Theology were the discussants.
