Welcome Speech by the Head of the Department

The Department of EU Studies, established in 1999, offers graduate studies including PhD, having two Jean Monnet Chairs, first in European Economic Integration and the current one in European Social Policy, the hosting of European Documentation Centre, the coordination of two JM Modules, and Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at DEU since 2011. It acts as a hub in Aegean region through close collaborations with other universities in the region where the faculty specializing in EU studies are mostly the graduates of the Department. The multidisciplinary nature of the offered programmes requires close cooperation with academics from other faculties, who contribute to the Department’s activities. The Department also offers lectures on EU related subjects to other departments at both graduate and undergraduate levels. It has concluded Erasmus agreements with many universities in EU countries. Besides the education activities, it is involved in extracurricular activities such as workshops, conferences and civil society-oriented education programmes with local NGOs and especially with business community, chambers on various sectors, women entrepreneurs and labour unions.

Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Social Sciences Department of European Union offers interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary post-graduate education in the field of European studies. As the department designs its graduate programmes with a holistic perspective, lecturers from different departments such as international relations, labour economics and industrial relations, economics, law, public finance, international business and trade, tourism management, philosophy and religious sciences give lectures and provide academic supervision to student of European Union.

The department launched the European Union Master’s Degree Programme in the 1999-2000 academic year, the European Union non-Thesis Master’s Programme in the 2000-2001 academic year, finally the European Studies PhD Programme in the 2002-2003 academic year. Our master’s degree programmes include courses (two semesters) on the foundations of the European Union while the PhD programme includes three semesters for doctoral courses. The students are expected to write a dissertation in MA (with thesis) and PhD programmes.

With approximately 20 years of experience in post-graduate education, the Department of European Union provides its students the knowledge and the ability to work in different fields such as universities, public institutions, civil society organizations and private sector.

The success of our students who are rewarded with the Jean Monnet Scholarship by the European Commission is another indication of the quality of our programmes. The Jean Monnet Scholarship is a project supported by European Commission that supports distinguished students for carrying out post graduate education and research. In this context, since 2000, 19 students were given the opportunity to engage in educational and research activities on a range of issues in different European countries. Besides the postgraduate education programmes, the department makes effort to strengthen its scientific structure through extracurricular activities such as academic workshops, conferences and seminars. With these activities, it also aims to create interconnections among different actors and institutions from a large scale of disciplines and to transfer knowledge and experience. Collaboration activities of the department include local NGOs, national organizations like TUNAECS, and international organizations such as ECPR.  The department established Erasmus exchange agreements and other academic exchange activities as of the 2007-2008 academic year. Through the years, we have also engaged in bilateral collaborations with many European universities. Recently, the department achieved another academic success as it is chosen to be part of the 100/2000 PhD Scholarship Programme supported by the Turkish Council of Higher Education. Therefore, the department employed a PhD student in September 2017 to carry out research activities in the field of “Migration”. Our department continuously develops its capacity and conducts projects that bring different researchers, institutions, organizations together.

2018-2021:  Jean Monnet Chair in “Social Cohesion” supported by European Union Erasmus + Programme. The project strengthens multi-disciplinary cooperation in the field of social integration and takes place with the participation of academicians of Dokuz Eylül University, Manisa Celal Bayar University, İzmir Katip Çelebi University and Aydın Adnan Menderes University.

2017-2020: The Project entitled “Heart of Anatolia European Centre of Excellence” supported by the Jean Monnet Programme under the European Union Erasmus+ Programme. The Project is carried out within the collaboration of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University as the central coordinator, Dokuz Eylul University as the partner and Department of European Union at DEU Graduate School of Social Sciences as the regional coordinator. Other partner institutions are *Çankırı Karatekin University, *Social Sciences University of Ankara, *Eskişehir Osmangazi University, *Konya Necmettin Erbakan University, and *Manisa Celal Bayar University. Each year, education, research and publishing activities are carried out with the participation of researchers from the 7 partner universities.

2014-2017: Jean Monnet Chair in “European Social Policy” supported by the Jean Monnet Programme under the European Union Erasmus+ Programme. As it carried out high quality education, research and cooperation development activities in a range of issues mainly in the field of European integration, the Department of European Union was rewarded the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in 2011. 2009-2014: Jean Monnet Module in “Strengthening the Competition Culture during the Accession Process” supported by the European Union Lifelong Learning Program. Aware of the significant role of competition policy for effective functioning of the internal market in the process of European integration, this module targeted different profession groups, especially lawyers. The main objective of this module, in which theory and practical knowledge was effectively combined, was to convey the EU competition policy to people who do not have academic knowledge about the Union. 2007-2010: Jean Monnet Chair in “European Economic Integration” supported by the European Union Lifelong Learning Program. 2005-2010: Jean Monnet Module in “the Policies and Institutions of an Enlarging EU” supported by the European Union Lifelong Learning Program. This module aimed to provide basic information on European integration to the graduate students of different departments at Dokuz Eylul University.
